Nakaumi is the sea that faces Tottori and Shimane prefectures.
In the old days, there was the Nakaura sluice gate at the entrance to Nakaumi, where seawater and freshwater were separated for reclamation purposes.
We overlook Nakaumi from Minatoyama Park in Yonago City.
Nakaumi is a central seabird sanctuary designated by the country as a wintering area for swans.
There used to be a lot of swan roosts in Nakaumi, but the reclamation resulted in the loss of shallow water.
Therefore, Yonago City decided to protect this wild bird habitat.
At the same time, it was developed as a park where citizens can come into contact with nature, and in 1995 Yonago City Mizutori Park was established.
In 2005, a part of Nakaumi became a Ramsar Convention-registered wetland.
Famous for the Ramsar Convention is Kushiro Marsh in Hokkaido, where the Japanese cranes fly.
Yonago Mizutori Park is located just off the city of Yonago.
You can see various migratory birds in all four seasons.
