Hometown series-Tottori sand dunes-

The “Hometown series” this time is the “Tottori Sand Dunes”.
The “Tottori Sand Dunes” are coastal dunes that spread along the Sea of Japan coast in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture.
It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, San’in Kaigan Geopark, like the Uradome Coast introduced last time.
It extends 2.4km north-south and 16km east-west.
It is the largest sand dunes in Japan that can be visited.
In 1955, it became a national natural monument, and in 2007 it became one of Japan’s 100 best geological features.
It is one of the symbols of Tottori Prefecture alongside Hoki Daisen, which is famous for mountain Buddhism.

The Tottori Sand Dunes have taken many years to repeat the following process.
Granites in the Chugoku Mountains become weathered sand.
When it rains, the sand becomes sediment and is transported to the Sendai River that flows through Tottori City.
It will be washed away by the river, flow out to the Sea of Japan and be pushed back to the coast by the waves.
The strong winds blowing from the Sea of Japan cause the sand to fly inland.

The maximum height difference of the Tottori Sand Dunes is 90Meters.
The large mortar, which has a large depression similar to a mortar, has a height of 40Meters.
On the slopes, you can see patterns of Saren and Fuumon in which the sand has fallen down as it flows.
In the deepest part, there is a place called “Oasis” where groundwater is springing out.
The magnificent nature scroll attracts tourists.

There was no figure on April 21, when I took the picture, due to the influence of the new corona.
At the entrance of the Tottori Sand Dunes, there are “rest museums”, souvenir shops, and “Sand Museum”.
Unfortunately, I could not enter here either.
Information about the dunes is displayed and explained at the “Tottori Dune Visitor Center”.
You can stop by before entering the dunes.

This concludes the introduction of Tottori Sand Dunes.
