street corner watching~ JR Yonago Station Building~

The street corner watching this time is “JR Yonago Station Building”.

The JR Yonago station building, which had been the gateway to San’in for 57 years, will be demolished.
This time, we will introduce the “JR Yonago Station Building”.
It is September 4, 2020.
The JR Yonago station building is closed today.
The new station building will open in 2023.
The new station building will allow access to the north and south.

Yonago Station is a core station of the former JNR, and because of the widening of the rolling stock depot, it hindered traffic between north and south.
Although this problem will be resolved, I am a little worried about the lack of urban planning for the northern development.

The old station building has various history.
I think the biggest thing is the JR privatization in 1987.
The former JNR was dismantled and privatized.
During the JNR era, the Yonago Station Building was the Yonago Railway Administration Bureau and was the base for the San’in Line, Hakubi Line, and Sakai Line.
In the olden days, it was called “Betsutsu” and was loved by many citizens.
As a memory, there is the blue train “Bed Limited Express Izumo” that connects Sanin with Tokyo.
I used to connect Shimane prefecture’s Hamada station-Tokyo station and Izumo-shi station-Tokyo station via Sanin line Kyoto station.

Due to the maintenance Shinkansen plan, the Blue Train has disappeared.
Currently, the only sleeper train in Japan, the “Sunrise Izumo-go”, operates from Izumo-shi station to Tokyo station.
However, the flight route was via the Hakubi Line.
In 1982, the Hakubi Line and Hoki Oyama Station to Izumoshi Station were electrified.
Along with that, the “Limited Express Yakumo” was electrified, connecting the Yonago and Okayama stations in about two hours.

In this way, the JR Yonago station building plays a role as a gateway to San’in.
The reason why it is said to be the commercial city of San’in is because the JR Yonago station building is working.
It will be reopened in 2023.
It is expected that many tourists will visit it when it is completed.
This concludes the introduction of “JR Yonago Station”.
